    There is another thing that the BBFC can sometimes do (but not all the time) that the MPAA (now just MPA) don't do (I think they don't anyway). And that's the fact that the BBFC also have the right to reject a work, and when that happens it technically means that work is banned in the UK. On their website, those works are listed with a N/A symbol in place of an age certificate and will also have a Unsuitible for classification section on the respective page. This is also why some films (even 18 rated ones) are still cut/censored in the UK. Also for the two PG-13 rated movies in America that are 18 in the UK, Taken (2008) was PG-13 because it was a censored version, UK cinemas were partially uncut at 15 (meaning only the torture scene comes from the PG-13 version, everything else different is uncut) and fully uncut for home viewing in the UK at 18. The Last Exorcism (2010), along with its sequel are actually rated 15 (always have been in both cinemas and home entertainment, even the bonus material for the first one is only a 15). The 18 rating on the DVD and Blu-ray boxes for those two films are probably indicating something else included on the discs (like bonus features that aren't related to the film or trailers that were rated 18 for other films). Another example I could think of is the film Bullet To The Head (2012), where the film itself (plus a trailer included as a bonus) is a 15 for both cinema and home entertainment, but the DVD and Blu-ray boxes show 18 again and it's possibly for other things entirely, not the film itself. I've also found examples of 12/12A rated movies that would sometimes show 15 on the box depending on the version, both Terminator 3: Rise Of The Machines (2003) and The Wolverine (2013) were rated 12/12A for both cinemas and home entertainment (including the latter's extended version), but some (but not all) DVDs actually have a 15 on them despite those films never recieving a 15 rating officially, nor did the trailers and/or bonus material for these two films recieved a 15 either (one trailer for The Wolverine did recieve a 15, but it was only used for cinemas, not for physical media). Either this situation is similar to the 15 rated films showing 18 on the boxes or it could be due to the fact that they seem to be strong for 12/12A thus they decide to just bump up the rating on some DVDs despite the BBFC not seeing those two films again.

    You are right with the film taking risks especially with but the problem is how it was executed. People were expecting so much from Luke's reappearance after 30 years since ROTJ ended and since TFA was teasing his importance to the whole narrative and why the characters need him only for TLJ to have him in the first scene of TLJ to throw his father's lightsaber and just walk away in a unintentional comedic manner. Also people wanted exact and in-depth reasons why he had to repeat the same mistakes he had avoided in the OT, and why he chose to abandon his sister and friend. Also it does not even seem to help that Luke dies after 'redeeming' himself instead of continuing to train the next generation of the jedi. But by the way Great Job!!

    • @thedudewhomadethisvideo
      @thedudewhomadethisvideo Месяц назад

      Yeah, his appearance in The Force Awakens is completely different to how he is in The Last Jedi. At the end of the film he seems to give Rey a sort of knowing look like he was expecting her, but then in The Last Jedi he is completely dismissive of her. Why would there be a map to his location if he intended to die on the island alone? That doesn’t make sense. So it is jarring. It’s why I said it didn’t seem to fit in the trilogy. Watching it as a standalone film it does work I’d say with Luke’s character, but not following The Force Awakens. I’ll make a video on that film at some point. Thank you for watching dude, I appreciate it

    It's always great to see a video that isn't just "this film sucks because it's not a 1/1 replica of the old EU! That's not how this thing that never got explained in the films works!". You praise the film where it deserves praise, and call out its genuine failings. I've always wondered how much of stuff like the forced comedy and restoring of the status quo was because of it being sandwiched between two other films, and Disney. I hope that Rian's trilogy still comes out. He's willing to question the framework, not just nostalgia bait. Comparing TLJ to something like Mando S3 or other Disney shows (barring Andor but Andor is up there with Empire in terms of quality) is night and day. It's risk vs riskless. And a film with ambition usually beats out a film with no ambition (my eyes are staring at a copy of The Rise of Skywalker but you can't see it.) I heavily agree with you on the whole 'Fandom Menace' thing. Trying to find channels that can critique these franchises I like or love (Doctor Who) without stumbling on manchildren who want to stay in a bubble of white nostalgia. For Star Wars, Sheev Talks (despite his sequel bashing) and especially Star Wars Centralized are great channels that haven't been infected by the brainrot, but can still criticise (Sheev's recent video about TPM was really good, I mostly stuck by the Plinkett review of that film, but it makes some points...about that review and inception blahblah. Great video. His two parter on the Clone Wars really opened my eyes.)

He has the Knives Out films he is working on. I do agree though The Last Jedi may not be good as a whole, the risks he took make the film memorable compared to how safe the other films are. Those channels are not good for film criticism or the fandom. They just cause more division and in fighting. I wish they would come to their senses and go away but when you get millions of views for spreading negativity like that you’ll keep doing it to satisfy your audience.

    With the sequels, nobody ever talks about any kind of love for the characters or the actors who play those characters. In fact it just seems to be all about Rian vs JJ and that's about it. When you hear Star Wars fans talk about either the OT or PT, they have a real love for the characters and for the actors who play those characters and for relationships that are formed both on and off screen. This adds to the fun of being a Star Wars fan. The sequels just don't seem to be part of the family. And defending the sequels by attacking the prequels is just getting boring now.

      Nothing against the actor, they’re fine; the problem is really the way the trilogy undermines the original story of the original six films and they’re main players I won’t go on for too long but by having the empire and the emperor rising to power again(if they were ever defeated) Luke’s story and that of his friends and comrades is pointless especially when they all meet their in the form of a humiliating defeat. They’re not even effective as mentors: Rey single-handedly triumphs with no help whatsoever from them(I’m not counting the training session Leia gave her as she doesn’t teach her any new or specific skills relevant to the plot)

It’s obvious that he tried a lot of different ideas on set but ran out of time and money and had to piece together what he had This meant that he couldn’t reveal the truth of any encompassing plot points and had to wait for the third movie This is why Snoke dies without a name. This is why we learn nothing about the first order itself and get these self contained subplots with holdo and Cantobite. This is also why Rey is a nobody: they needed an “I am your father moment” but the only retractable answer(necessary depending on what the following filmmaker wanted to do) was she’s “nothing”. I know it seems ridiculous watching the whole trilogy through and I’m not disagreeing but the truth is JJ didn’t want to reveal the truth of Rey’s lineage till the end of the trilogy, assuming people would still be curious or at least the sunk cost fallacy would kick in The plan was to have a character like Kylo Ren who could very well have a motive for lying. Not to mention we don’t see Rey’s parents in the cave scene nor do we learn her surname

I agree a lot of those reaction channels feel like they dont even know the lore of star wars, and how truly vast it is. The muti-media legends and cannon based lore of the franchise endless amount of stories through all eras of the galaxy far far away. Showing different genre beats, from action to romance and even horror. There's soooo much more to this universe than just the main 9 movies. And man, am I upset that the Solo sequeals got canned due to all the crying from The Last Jedi.

      Solo’s sequels mainly got canned because the film bombed at the box office, but yeah the mixed reception to The Last Jedi I am sure did impact it. But it’s a shame Star Wars is now really just on TV as opposed to a feature film.

      The solo sequels because they failed to even make the budget back They went over budget because Kathy Kennedy announced multiple projects at once with no story or direction and just let multiple filmmakers run wild Of course, with solo she paid the price: she finally saw the 90% of the film that was shot and it didn’t suit her. She then had to hire Ron Howard to shoot it from scratch. They didn’t have any confidence in this film which is why they released in May instead of December and of course they couldn’t simply say, on a public platform, that they were wreckless(not in front of their shareholders)

    With the exception of "Titanic", I've never seen the films mentioned in this video. I will say that I hate how the MPAA rates movies. If I had been part of that group, I would have argued for different ratings, taking the context into account. I call myself a *Movie Rating Debater* because I frequently disagree with how many movies are rated. Compare "Jaws" (1975) and "The Fog" (1980), for example. Jaws contains graphic shark attacks, a lot of blood and gore, and disturbing moments. Jaws is rated PG. In contrast, The Fog contains only bloodless violence and one very brief shot of mild gore. The Fog is rated R. Both films contain moderate profanity, but Jaws uses it more frequently than The Fog. If you ask me, Jaws should have been rated R while The Fog should have been rated PG. Now for the topic of this video. I believe that non-sexual nudity should be separated from sexual/erotic nudity because they are very different from one another. If it was up to me, non-sexual nudity would be rated G while sexualized nudity would retain its R rating. Unfortunately, too many people have trouble separating simple, non-sexual nudity from its sexualized counterpart. I think that's the reason why porn is so popular in the United States and in other parts of the world.

    nobody even cared about the manga before this movie. it's just some obscure source material no one knew about until the movie became a huge hit. people mentioning the manga are the like the people who talk about how all of shakespeare's stories were all lifted from somebody else. plot isn't what makes something great, it was shakespeare's use of language that made him so great. same with this movie, it was all the ancillary things that make a movie great that makes oldboy such a masterpiece.

    • @thedudewhomadethisvideo
      @thedudewhomadethisvideo 3 месяца назад

      You are speculating, you don’t know if nobody cared. I mean Park Chan-wook cared enough to adapt it, he saw the potential in the story. Your point about Shakespeare as well I am not understanding. The film is still an adaptation of the source material, if no one cared or not is irrelevant.

So the point was to show how he adapted it, the changes he made both in the story, thematically and culturally as well. If you looking at it as a film, yes it is a masterpiece but as an adaptation it’s bad. You need to take the source material in to account, you can’t just ignore where the inspiration came from.

    • @thedudewhomadethisvideo
      @thedudewhomadethisvideo 4 месяца назад

      Well there is lots of different ways you can interpret what a good adaptation is. I mean yes books, manga comics use a completely different language to film. Lots of book readers will say how the book is always better than the film adaptation. I kind of judge it on if the film is thematically like the source material, in which the authors original intent is still there in the film adaptation. Yes it won’t follow the source material beat for beat but it will still keep the important plot points from the source material. In the case of Oldboy you also need to take the cultural context in to account as well. If you are a fan of the manga and watch the film adaptation you will probably be completely bewildered with how different it is and how thematically it is not the same. Oldboy is a masterpiece and it is far better than the source material in my opinion. But yeah as an adaptation it does fail in that regard, even though it still keeps plot points from the manga, it just uses them in a different context.

    • @ashesfrombones
      @ashesfrombones 3 месяца назад

Guess what, Jurassic Park was NOT how the book was written, GODFATHER was NOT how the book was written, FIGHTCLUB was NOT how the book was written... but they work, that's GOOD "Adaptation"

    • @thedudewhomadethisvideo
      @thedudewhomadethisvideo 3 месяца назад

      @@ashesfrombones ‘attached to the manga’? Really you completely misunderstood what I said. Listen, I watched the film long before I read the manga, I found the manga disappointing. I am comparing them objectively, I do not think the manga in anyway shape of form is better than the film and I do not think the film is bad. It’s a masterpiece, one of my favourite films of all time, but if you are looking at it as a sole adaptation of the source material that keeps all the themes and important plot points from the manga then it’s a bad adaptation. This video is me looking at it through that train of thought, because I find it interesting how Park Chan-wook changed the themes of the source material to best suit his style and for a Korean audience. What he kept from the manga is yes he is imprisoned and let out, he meets a woman on his first night out and he kept the hypnotising stuff but uses it in a different way. That’s it, everything else is different, the context is different, the way the characters act are different and the reason is different. Did I ever say that was a bad thing? No, I am looking at it from an adaption point of view, because it’s interesting and lots of other people did too.

    2:59 In the movie, the daughter isn't murdered along with the mother, she is supposedly adopted into a family overseas. Just because the storyline doesn't stick to the manga point by point, doesn't necessarily make it a 'terrible' adaptation, which in turn doesn't make it an 'adaptation' either per say, it becomes more of a stand-alone movie loosely based on it. You get an idea from novels, stories, etc., and branch from that and give that its own shape/form (at the very core of the movie's theme is 'revenge' absent from the manga) and the movie being even called an 'adaptation' at that point sounds rather clueless. And the most important thing is that the movie turned out to be a brilliant modern day take on the Greek tragedies, unlike the mediocre, somewhat dull manga series. Lastly, @7:30 it's san 'nahg-gee', you spelling it 'nachi' there, seemingly the way 'you' want or see fit is very culturally appropriating on you, so freely 'phonetically Japanizing' a Korean word-

    • @thedudewhomadethisvideo
      @thedudewhomadethisvideo 4 месяца назад

      Oh yes slight oversight on my behalf, I recall the scene where they look for her and see she is apparently been adopted by a family in Sweden. I called it a terrible adaptation because it really is if it’s trying to adapt the manga and made that point at the end of the video that does it really matter as long as the film is great. But I made the video because I feel like it’s worth pointing out, when many films get criticised for taking liberties with the source material. As for your last point, it’s a quote directly taken from that essay and that is how he spells it. There is nothing ‘culturally appropriating’ about it because I didn’t write it. Cultural appropriation is also a concept created by Americas who have probably never been out of the country and want to be offended on behalf people from another culture, when they themselves do not care and even appreciate the fact that you appreciate their culture. I mean you could even say that Park Chan-wook was appropriating Japanese culture by adapting this story for a Korean audience, he even did the same with The Handmaiden, appropriating the fingersmith which is a British novel. How dare he appropriate my culture! I really can’t take you seriously if you unironically use that saying, because it has no basis in reality.
